The sessions brought together clinicians, sector leaders and professional bodies to explore a shared challenge across the UK: ensuring people can access hearing care when and where they need it.\r\n  <\/p>\r\n\r\n  <!-- Clear float for next section -->\r\n  <div style=\"clear:both;\"><\/div>\r\n\r\n  <div class=\"news-article-content\">\r\n\r\n    <h2 style=\"color:#b47f0d; font-size:26px; margin:40px 0 15px;\">\r\n      The Challenge: Uneven Access Across Nations\r\n    <\/h2>\r\n\r\n    <p>\r\n      Across Scotland and Wales, many people still face long waits for hospital-based audiology appointments. In some areas of Scotland, adults are waiting up to <strong>90 weeks<\/strong> for an initial hearing assessment \u2014 and in certain regions, more than <strong>200 weeks<\/strong> for follow\u2011up care, according to publicly available waiting\u2011time data.\r\n    <\/p>\r\n\r\n    <p>\r\n      In Wales, waiting times for hospital audiology have <strong>doubled in the last five years<\/strong>, based on publicly available NHS board data.\r\n    <\/p>\r\n\r\n    <p>\r\n      Behind every statistic is a real person trying to stay connected to family, work and community.\r\n    <\/p>\r\n\r\n    <p>\r\n      In our clinic, we often hear the same story:<br>\r\n      <strong>\u201cI\u2019ve waited years\u2026 I wish I\u2019d done something sooner.\u201d<\/strong><br>\r\n      It\u2019s a reminder of how profoundly hearing loss affects confidence, communication and quality of life \u2014 and how transformative timely care can be.\r\n    <\/p>\r\n\r\n    <p>\r\n      These national conversations reflect what we hear every day in our own clinic \u2014 people want timely, local care delivered by professionals they trust.\r\n    <\/p>\r\n\r\n    <h2 style=\"color:#b47f0d; font-size:26px; margin:40px 0 15px;\">\r\n      What We Heard at Holyrood and the Senedd\r\n    <\/h2>\r\n\r\n    <p>Despite taking place in different nations, both roundtables centred on similar themes:<\/p>\r\n\r\n    <ul style=\"margin:20px 0 20px 20px;\">\r\n      <li><strong>Rising Demand for Hearing Care<\/strong><\/li>\r\n      <li><strong>Stretched Hospital Capacity<\/strong><\/li>\r\n      <li><strong>The Impact of Geography on Access<\/strong><\/li>\r\n      <li><strong>The Importance of Aftercare<\/strong><\/li>\r\n      <li><strong>The Need for Sustainable, Community\u2011Based Pathways<\/strong><\/li>\r\n    <\/ul>\r\n\r\n    <p>\r\n      There was a shared recognition that hearing care works best when it is <strong>local, timely and supported by ongoing follow\u2011up<\/strong>.\r\n    <\/p>\r\n\r\n    <h2 style=\"color:#b47f0d; font-size:26px; margin:40px 0 15px;\">\r\n      The Opportunity: Community Audiology Already Delivering Care\r\n    <\/h2>\r\n\r\n    <p>\r\n      A key point raised in both nations was the role of community audiology \u2014 delivered by <strong>HCPC\u2011registered, professionally regulated clinicians<\/strong> working in local clinics across the UK.\r\n    <\/p>\r\n\r\n    <p>Community audiology already provides:<\/p>\r\n\r\n    <ul style=\"margin:20px 0 20px 20px;\">\r\n      <li><strong>Full Diagnostic Hearing Assessments<\/strong><\/li>\r\n      <li><strong>Hearing Aid Fittings<\/strong><\/li>\r\n      <li><strong>Rehabilitation Support<\/strong><\/li>\r\n      <li><strong>Ongoing Aftercare<\/strong><\/li>\r\n      <li><strong>Continuity of Care Close to Home<\/strong><\/li>\r\n    <\/ul>\r\n\r\n    <p>\r\n      These services reduce travel burdens, shorten waiting times and help people stay connected to their families, work and communities.\r\n    <\/p>\r\n\r\n    <p>\r\n      Some regions are already exploring new models that bring care closer to home \u2014 from redesigned referral pathways to community-first approaches. While these developments vary across nations, the direction of travel is clear: care works best when it is accessible, local and sustainable.\r\n    <\/p>\r\n\r\n    <h2 style=\"color:#b47f0d; font-size:26px; margin:40px 0 15px;\">\r\n      Why Aftercare Matters\r\n    <\/h2>\r\n\r\n    <p>\r\n      Aftercare was a strong theme in both discussions. Hearing aids are most effective when people receive support to adjust, build confidence and understand how to get the best from their technology.\r\n    <\/p>\r\n\r\n    <p>\r\n      Without aftercare, hearing aids often end up unused \u2014 not because they don\u2019t work, but because people haven\u2019t had the help they need to use them well.\r\n    <\/p>\r\n\r\n    <p>\r\n      Community audiology is uniquely positioned to provide this ongoing support.\r\n    <\/p>\r\n\r\n    <h2 style=\"color:#b47f0d; font-size:26px; margin:40px 0 15px;\">\r\n      Technology and Attitudes Are Changing\r\n    <\/h2>\r\n\r\n    <p>\r\n      Another shared theme was stigma. Many people still delay seeking help because they worry about how hearing aids will look or what others might think.\r\n    <\/p>\r\n\r\n    <p>\r\n      But attitudes are shifting. Hearing technology has advanced dramatically in the last decade, and more people \u2014 including public figures, athletes and clinicians themselves \u2014 now wear hearing aids openly and confidently.\r\n    <\/p>\r\n\r\n    <p>\r\n      As technology evolves, our models of care must evolve with it.\r\n    <\/p>\r\n\r\n    <h2 style=\"color:#b47f0d; font-size:26px; margin:40px 0 15px;\">\r\n      Looking Ahead\r\n    <\/h2>\r\n\r\n    <p>\r\n      The conversations at Holyrood and the Senedd were not about politics. They were about people \u2014 and about how we can work together across sectors to ensure that hearing care is accessible, timely and sustainable.\r\n    <\/p>\r\n\r\n    <p>\r\n      Community-based audiology is not a replacement for hospital services. It is a way of strengthening the system, reducing pressure and ensuring that no one waits years for support that could change their life.\r\n    <\/p>\r\n\r\n    <p>\r\n      Across the nations, the message was clear:<br>\r\n      <strong>Hearing care should be available when and where it\u2019s needed most.<\/strong>\r\n    <\/p>\r\n\r\n    <p>\r\n      The workforce already exists \u2014 regulated, qualified and embedded in communities.<br>\r\n      The challenge now is building pathways that use it well.\r\n    <\/p>\r\n\r\n    <br>\r\n\r\n    <p>\r\n      We\u2019re proud to be part
