Why Real Ear Measurements Matter

Real Ear Measurements (REM) are one of the most important steps in delivering accurate, personalised hearing care — yet many people have never seen what the process looks like. With our REM equipment back from calibration this month, we’ve been carrying out a number of verification sessions in clinic, and it felt like the perfect time to explain why REM matters and how it helps you hear at your best.

What are Real Ear Measurements?

REM is a clinical procedure that measures how sound behaves in your ear canal while you’re wearing hearing aids. Because every ear is shaped differently, sound reaches the eardrum in slightly different ways. REM allows us to see this in real time and adjust your hearing aids with precision.

In simple terms: REM ensures your hearing aids are fitted to you — not to an average or a guess.

Why REM matters

REM is considered the gold standard for hearing aid fitting because it:

• improves clarity and comfort
• ensures speech is amplified correctly
• avoids over‑ or under‑amplification
• provides evidence‑based, measurable results
• supports long‑term hearing success

It’s one of the clearest ways to demonstrate that your hearing care is grounded in clinical accuracy rather than trial‑and‑error adjustments.

What happens during a REM appointment?

The process is straightforward and comfortable:

• A thin, soft probe tube is placed in the ear canal
• Your hearing aids are fitted as normal
• We play calibrated speech sounds
• The REM software shows how those sounds reach your eardrum
• We fine‑tune your hearing aids based on the live data

The whole process takes only a few minutes and makes a significant difference to the quality of your hearing.

Supporting professional development

You may see Tracy assisting with REM sessions as part of her supervised clinical development. This hands‑on experience is an important part of her formal Hearing Care Assistant training, and it’s been great to see her confidence grow as she supports patients through the process.

Why independent clinics lead on REM

Not all providers routinely carry out REM, but for us it’s a non‑negotiable part of best practice. It ensures every patient receives care that is:

• personalised
• evidence‑based
• transparent
• clinically accountable

We’re proud to offer this level of verification here in Motherwell, and we’re always happy to show patients exactly how the process works.
